Equipment

  • Skillet
  • Pie dish
  • Rolling Pin

Ingredients

For the Filling

  • 1 lb Ground Beef Main protein source; can swap with ground pork, chicken, or turkey.
  • 1 medium Onion Adds flavor; shallots can be a great milder alternative.
  • 2 cloves Garlic Use fresh for the best flavor.
  • 1 tsp Cinnamon Adds warmth; adjust to taste.
  • 1 tsp Cloves Adds complexity; adjust to taste.
  • 1 tsp Nutmeg Adds depth; adjust to taste.
  • 2 medium Potatoes Helps thicken filling; can use breadcrumbs.
  • 1 cup Beef Broth Opt for low-sodium for less salt.
  • 2 tbsp Fresh Parsley Imparts freshness; thyme can be a substitute.

For the Crust

  • 1 pie Pastry Dough Store-bought or homemade.

Instructions

Filling Preparation

  • In a skillet, heat a drizzle of oil over medium heat. Brown the ground beef until it's no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes.
  • Add the chopped onion and garlic, cooking for 3-4 minutes until softened and fragrant.
  • Stir in the cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg, allowing the spices to bloom for another 2-3 minutes.
  • Incorporate diced potatoes and a splash of beef broth, then simmer for 10-15 minutes until the potatoes are tender.
  • Finally, add fresh parsley and let the mixture cool.

Pie Assembly

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Roll out a sheet of pastry on a floured surface to fit your pie dish.
  • Line the dish with the pastry and fill it with the cooled beef mixture.
  • Top with another sheet of pastry, crimping the edges to seal tight.
  • Cut a small slit in the top to allow steam to escape, and brush the surface with a beaten egg.

Baking

  • Place the pie in the preheated oven and bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the crust turns golden brown.
  • Let it cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Serve with pickles or a light salad for a refreshing balance. Let the filling cool before placing it in the crust to prevent a soggy base. Adjust spices to your taste preferences for a unique twist.
