Equipment

  • microwave-safe bowl
  • Double boiler
  • Muffin Tin
  • Whisk
  • spoon

Ingredients

For the Batter

  • 4 oz Semi-sweet chocolate You can swap this with dark chocolate for a more intense flavor.
  • 1/2 cup Butter Consider using a plant-based butter for a dairy-free alternative.
  • 1 cup Powdered sugar Do not use granulated sugar as it can alter the final texture, making it less desirable.
  • 2 Eggs For an egg-free option, try a flaxseed or chia seed egg.
  • 2 Egg yolks Keep in mind to only use if not making an egg-free version.
  • 1 tsp Vanilla extract Feel free to substitute with almond extract for a unique twist.
  • 1/4 cup All-purpose flour A gluten-free flour blend can be swapped in for those avoiding gluten.
  • 1 pinch Salt A necessary addition to balance sweetness and bring out the chocolate flavor.

For the Hazelnut Swirl

  • 1 tbsp Nutella or hazelnut spread You may also use a homemade hazelnut paste for a fresh twist.

Instructions

Steps for Preparation

  • In a microwave-safe bowl or double boiler, combine semi-sweet chocolate and butter. Heat gently, stirring frequently until everything is smooth and melted—aim for a velvety consistency.
  • Add the powdered sugar to the chocolate mixture, whisking until fully combined and smooth.
  • Crack in the eggs and egg yolks, then pour in the vanilla extract. Whisk everything together until creamy and beautifully blended.
  • Gently add the all-purpose flour and salt, folding until just combined.
  • Grease your muffin tin or line it with silicone cupcake liners. Divide the batter evenly into 6 cups, leaving a little room for the hazelnut swirl.
  • Spoon a dollop of Nutella or your preferred hazelnut spread right into the center of each cup.
  • Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and bake the cups for 10-12 minutes.
  • Once baked, allow the lava cups to cool for about 1-2 minutes before carefully removing them from the tin. Dust with powdered sugar to add a touch of elegance.

Notes

Serve warm with fresh raspberries or vanilla ice cream for a delightful contrast.
